On three hot summer nights in August 2007 Richie Ramone performed a 17 minute drum solo interpretation of the score for Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story to mark the 50th anniversary of the original production. The performances were in front of a sold out crowd at the Descanso Gardens (North of Pasadena, CA)
For roughly a year, Richie devised his own West Side Story medley, called Suite for Drums and Orchestra, that distills several of the musicals motifs into one 17-minute drum-dominated performance. Working with an electronic drum kit using ProTools software, Richie developed his arrangement.
The chance to play the long and intricate piece fulfills a lifelong dream for Richie.
In an interview, Richie said: "I'm gonna jam this thing down your throat so that you're not going to be able to breathe with your mouth open." Night standing ovations from thrilled crowds proved Richie right.
